January 26th 2025 is a significant day in the history of St Joseph Convent, Sagar as it marked its Platinum Jubilee during the Twin Jubilee of our revered Founder Servant of God Raymond Francis Camillus Mascarenhas. The day was celebrated with great joy and reverence, commemorating 75 years of its steadfast commitment to pastoral service, education, and uplift of the downtrodden. This milestone is a testament to the legacy of Bethany sisters, being a beacon of hope and inspiration under the patronage of St Joseph, since its inception on May 17th, 1950. Over the decades, it has grown from humble beginnings into a much sought after institution, shaping thousands of lives with its emphasis on moral values, academic excellence, and holistic development.
A special feature of the celebration was the reminiscence of the pioneers and the early sisters who have built up the mission with their dedicated lives. The newly erected tombs of the demised sisters were blessed by Bishop Most Rev Dr Francis Serrao SJ of Shimoga Diocese, offering prayers for departed souls. Several sisters and priests were present to grace the occasion.
The celebration began with a thanksgiving Mass, in St Joseph’s Church, presided over by Bishop Most Rev Dr Francis Serrao SJ, who commended the institution for its remarkable journey of faith and service. Msgr Felix Joseph Noronha, the parish priest and 9 priests of the Diocese joined in concelebration. Sr Marian warmly welcomed the congregation. Bishop Francis Serrao delivered a thought-provoking homily with reference to the conversion of St Paul. Sr Reshma Lynet thanked one and all. After the Mass, cake was distributed to the participants.
Thereafter the dignitaries were led to the church hall for the felicitation programme by the school band and 75 lamp holders. Most Rev Dr Francis Serrao SJ presided over the programme. Sr Mariette BS the General Councillor of the Congregation was the Chief Guest of the day, Sr Sahana BS, the Provincial Superior of Bangalore Province, Msgr Fr Felix Joseph Noronha, the parish priest were the guests of honour. Bishop appreciated the sisters for their vibrant role by being a uniting force in the pastoral life of the parish imparting value based education. Sr Mariette placed on record their compassionate love and service, carrying on the legacy of the Founder during the past 75 years and for inspiring many vocations.
Sr Geetha Pinto, compered the event, Sr Molly Sharon accorded a warm welcome to the gathered, Sr Rita Therese and Sr Lydia Dsouza introduced dignitaries and sisters to be honored. The history of the mission was depicted through dance drama directed by Sr Tresa Lydia. Tribute to the Servant of God RFC Mascarenhas was paid through dance by Nirmala Girls High School. Felicitation programme concluded with a note of thanks by Sr Lydia Dsouza.
Along with the dignitaries, the priests, sisters, BLA members, parishioners, PPC, financial committee members, the teaching fraternity of the past and the present of all the institutions of BES at Sagar, the former and present helpers, shared an agape meal at St Joseph’s Convent premises, reflecting the joy of sharing in the one mission.
As the sisters embark on the new chapter, they remain steadfast in their call to be witnesses of hope, through their mission of compassionate service and excellence in the society. May St Joseph, the father and protector of Bethany bless us to continue this noble mission walking in the footsteps of Servant of God RFC Mascarenhas.
