The process of self-formation is a continuous journey, not a ready-made state. It unfolds through deliberate choices and actions. The period of formation holds paramount significance in the life of those being shaped. Actively engaging in the formation programme, recognizing various dimensions of challenges, and addressing them maturely are integral aspects of this process. With this understanding, Provincial Superiors from Bangalore, Mangalore, Western and Southern Provinces, Province Coordinators for Formation and all the Formators from ‘Come and See to Tertiate period’ from the above units and the Central Delegation congregated at Bethany Provincial House, Bangalore for a Formators' Meet from 28-30 August 2023.
The three days proved to be days of immense blessings as we shared and listened to one another. Each participant brought forth their wealth of experiences. Sr Mariette the General Coordinator for Formation in her keynote addresssed light on the beatitudes for formators and called on us to listen to the voices of our formees which was truly inspiring. She also provided us with guidelines for the preparation of the 'Manual for Formators' as per the mandate of the XVII General Chapter.
The primary goal of formation is to assist the formee in understanding oneself and, in turn, conforming oneself to Jesus, whom they have chosen to dedicate their life to. Rev Fr Dionysius Vas S J, Provincial Superior of the Karnataka Province, shared insights on strengthening aspects of formation and addressed on the concerns faced by formees, formators, formation system and the structure. Sr Shalet Mendonca, the Formation Coordinator for Western Province in her session on ‘Formation with reference to Vita Consecrata and other Church documents,’ elucidated the role of formators. Sr Shana the Provincial Superior of Bangalore Province provided an elaborate explanation of formation in accordance with our Constitution, Directory, and General Chapter decrees. Formators from each stage of formation presented the challenges they encounter, raising awareness of the diverse hurdles in the formation process. At the end we arrived at an action plan as Way-Forward and resolved to make disciples for Jesus as per the demands of the gospel.
The Scripture passage from Romans 12:2 reminded us not to conform ourselves to the world but to be transformed through the renewal of our minds, discerning the will of God, that which is good, acceptable, and perfect. The days spent in reflection, discussion, sharing, and action planwere truly incredible, leaving us with a renewed sense of purpose and positivity as formators moving forward.
We are profoundly grateful to Sr Rose Celine our Superior General and Sr Mariette the General Coordinator for Formation for this wonderful opportunity granted to the four Provinces of South India and the Central Delegationto delve into various topics in the formation RATIO; it proved to be an enriching experience. The exceptional hospitality offered by Sr Sahana the Provincial Superior and the sisters at Bethany Provincialate Bangalore was commendable.
