Sacred Heart Convent was opened at Basrikatte amidst the lush green hills and valleys, coffee and tea estates and silvery streams, by Mother Macrina, the then Superior General, at the request of Rev Fr Edwin Pinto, the then parish priest of Basrikatte, and Rev. Alphonsus Mathias, Bishop of Chickmagalur. The main purpose of starting the Convent was to cater to the educational needs of the children, to catechize people of estates and sub- station.
Sister Clemence was the first Superior. Sr Euphrasia, Sr Peace and Sr Flavia were the pioneers. On 30th April 1965 Fr Edwin Pinto blessed the renovated building and it was named Sacred Heart Convent after the patron of the parish.
On 1st June 1965 the sisters began classes in English Medium as well as in Kannada medium. The school was recognized and admitted to grant-in-aid in 1968 only with Kannada medium school. Besides education, they had a dispensary run by Sr Colette, who was also a trained teacher and trained nurse; she became the Superior and Headmistress of the School.
