Most Rev Fr Thomas Pulloppillil DD, Bishop of Bongaigaon invited the Bethany Sisters to participate in the new Mission at Panigaon village in Nalbari, Assam. Sr Noeline the Provincial Superior accepted the invitation and sent Sisters to assist in the starting of the School taking this as an extended mission of Bethany Convent, Garchuk, Guwahati.
Sr Hilda Ida and Sr Catherine Rongmai were in charge of this extension service of the Garchuk community. Fr Nicolas who was in charge of the mission welcomed the sisters and settled them in the house, the Bishop had rented for them. Their immediate task was to teach in the newly founded St Mary’s School. They joined the Guwahati Community for all the major feasts and the Monthly Recollection.
The formal inauguration of this mission was held on 2 March 2009. Most Rev Thomas Pulloppillil DD, Bishop of Bongaigaon Diocese, offered the Holy Eucharist and blessed the temporary School building. Sr Noeline, the Provincial Superior, a few Sisters and some priests from Bongaigaon, graced the occasion. The School began with 125 students.
On 16 July 2010 the new community at Panigaon was canonically erected with Sr Hilda Ida as the Superior. Sr Cartherine Rongmai and Sr Mary Kikon were the members.
The people of Nalbari are predominantly Assamese with a few of Bodo families. This is the first Catholic institution in Nalbari District of Assam state.
The Diocese along with the Province has built the Convent building which was inaugurated on 28 April 2013. At present Sr Philomen Rodrigues is the Superior of the house and Sr Gilbertine, Sr Maria Magdeline, Sr Connelly and Sr Rose Dukru are the members.
