Bethany Convent, Siliguri was a response to the pressing invitation of Most Rev Vincent Aind, the Bishop of Bagdogra diocese to collaborate in the mission of education in Asha Niketan School and in the caring of children in the semi-orphanage called Ashagram, at Ranidanga in Siliguri. Siliguri in the District of Dajeeling, is at the foot of Himalayas, surrounded by tea gardens. Sr Joy the Provincial Superior of North East Province initiated the mission in Siliguri on 21st February 2019 with the permission of Sr Rose Celine the Superior General and her council. Sr Edleburgh was assigned to take up the school immediately assisted by Sr Diana. Another purpose of opening the mission was to have our own place for formation of Pre-novices in Siliguri.
Ashagram has nine cottages which have 41 children mainly coming from tea gardens who are either with single parent or no parents at all. This project is sponsored by Germans. Each house has a Mother who cares for these children 24x7. The sister Administrator looks after the affairs of the Ashagram and spiritual needs of the children. The children are very happy with the sisters’ presence in Ashagram. Asha Niketan school was started to educate these children and it also admits children of the locality. Presently it has a strength of 500 children.
Under the leadership of Sr Edleburgh and Sr Diana the school has progressed much in a short span of time and the parents and children are happy with the sisters’ presence. The school re-opened on 17 June 2019 with Sr Marina, as the new Principal and Sr Ordilia as the new Administrator. Fr Felix Pinto the director of Asha Niketan School warmly welcomed them on 18 June during a short program.
