Educational ministry
Nazareth Convent, Bajpe was established on 28th September 1930 with the approval of late Bishops, Most Rev. Valerian JD Souza and Most Rev V. R.
Fernandes. In the beginning the sisters occupied a small rented house situated within the church premises. The first Superior of the convent was Sr Josephine. Sr Raphael assisted her in the school. They carried out their educational ministry at Little Flower Primary School, which was inaugurated on 4th October 1931 and was managed by the parish priest.
The sisters bought 4 acres of land. Another 2 acres were donated by Mr Cyprian Arouza Pai of Bajpe and a convent was built which is now called Nazareth Home. In 1964 Fr Carvalho felt the need for a High School for girls. Thus the high school was opened on 16th July 1964 and Sr Valeria became the first headmistress. The present impressive school building was completed under the leadership of Sr Rose on 1st June, 1966. From its modest beginnings, the High School gradually and steadily developed through the relentless efforts of the Headmistresses. Both Little Flower Hr Pry School as well as Holy Family High schools are now flourishing with an increasing number of students on its roll and are recognized for their meritorious scholastic achievements. All the past correspondents and headmistress have led the school ably to reach the present status. Parallel English Medium sections from VIII standard have also been started in 2009.
To make convenient for the Sisters a new building was constructed in the vicinity of the High School in 1967. The building was completed and inaugurated by late Bishop Rt. Rev Dr Basil D Souza of Mangalore on 12th April 1969 and the sisters moved into their new residence.
The selfless service of the sisters was duly recognized and appreciated by the people of the locality. It is indeed a great pleasure for the sisters of the community to render their best service at the time of the visit of our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II to Bajpe on 6th February, 1986.
29th September 2004 was a very significant day as the sisters of Nazareth convent stepped into its Platinum Jubilee year. With profound gratitude to God, the sisters celebrated the Platinum Jubilee on 1st October 2005, with the Holy Eucharist at 10:00 am concelebrated by Rt Rev Dr Aloysius P D Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore along with other priests. Sr Christella, as the superior of the convent and the correspondent of both the schools, undertook the responsibility to plan the celebration of the Platinum Jubilee, to construct the “Nazareth Platinum Jubilee Auditorium” and to bring out the Souvenir “Nazareth Rays”.
Nazareth Convent, Bajpe has not only a glorious history of 85 years to remember and to recount, but also a great deal of good still to be accomplished!! With hope, they look forward to the future, to do even greater things.
