Genazzano Convent owes its origin to Rev Fr A Piedade DSouza, the parish priest of Holy Cross Church Taccode, who made a special request on 13th June 1937 to Fr Founder for the opening of a convent in his parish. So obtaining permission from the Bishop Rt Rev Dr VR Fernandes four Sisters Sr Pia, Sr Pauline, Sr Purifica and Sr Justa were sent to Taccode on 7th July 1937 for the mission of education through the parochial school viz.., St Joseph’s Higher Elementary School. The community Genazzano Convent by a decree of erection dated 21th July 1937. Sr Pia was installed as the first superior of the community. They resided in Mr Martin D’Cunha’s house at Kaikamba, Taccode, for about one year. The sisters walked daily to the school. The parish priest had leased a plot of one acre to the sisters near the church. They began to build their convent building in that plot. They also sunk a well for domestic purpose. Later Taccode became the cradle for religious vocations.
The sisters are involved both in educational and pastoral apostolate. Looking back over the years it has been a long innings; one will agree as the saying in Konkani goes ‘Taccode, bara akkode’, the sisters indeed have crossed several hurdles with their faith deeply anchored in Christ their Beloved.
