St Joseph’s Convent Basrur, is at the junction of Konkan Railway Route and forest department, 7 kilometers away to the east of Kundapur, a village nurtured by the waters of the river Halady.
It was at the invitation of late Rev Fr Placid Pereira, the parish priest of St Philip Neri Church Basrur, the Bethany Sisters ventured in 1967 to meet the demands of Primary education for the rural poor, the much felt need of the day. The Superior General Rev. Mother Macrina, taking with her Sr Berchmans, the first superior of the convent, Sr Marie Ange and Sr Clarentia and a maid Bijju bai arrived to the rhythm of a thunderous applause in the church during Sunday Mass on 20th May 1967. The church band welcomed the sisters with the sweet notes of their instruments.
The community was canonically erected on 1st June, 1967 with Berchmans, Sr Jovita, Sr Nazareen and Sr Elnora as the pioneer members. When the Bethany Sisters began their new mission in Basrur the Primary school of the parish had only up to V standard and the day the sisters reached the school they opened VI standard and began their educational apostolate. People of the locality liked the selfless and dedicated service and they were generous in sharing with them whatever they had.
The sisters do continue to serve the people of Basrur teaching catechism, educating the poor in the school, visiting the families, taking care of church linens, animating Society of Vincent de Paul, Christian Life Community, Young Christian Students and helping the people to prepare for Liturgy.
Presently the parish priest Rev Fr Vishal Lobo, filled with missionary zeal is happy with the contribution that is made by the sisters. They continue to count on the warm accompaniment and unfailing support of the local people to make a difference in the lives of the younger generation.
