When Rev Fr Basil A. D Souza was the Parish Priest of Kirem and the correspondent of the parochial school and the college, he was looking for the religious Sisters to replace the retiring Headmaster Mr Joseph Pinto who served the school for 36 years. This news was heard by Sr Devota and Sr Bertha in Kinnigoli who contacted Superior General Rev Mother Macrina for a new avenue of spreading of God’s compassionate love through education after an agreement between the aforesaid officials. Rev Mother Macrina sent Sr Noreen as Headmistress of Pompei Higher Primary School Talipady accompanied by Sr Regis on 1st June 1967. Initially both Sr Noreen and Sr Regis daily walked from Maryvale Convent and went to teach in the school. Later on they were housed in Maggu Bai’s house.
On 29th April, 1970 the Bishop of Mangalore Rt Rev Basil S DSouza was happy to bless and inaugurate the new house of the Mother of Mercy Convent. Education was the main ministry.
According to the agreement 50% of the teaching posts in the school were to be given to the Sisters, and therefore, the sisters were appointed as teachers in the place of retired lay teachers as a result of which the membership of the community Sisters was on the increase.
Together with the educational apostolate the sisters were very much interested in pastoral work i.e. animating the people for liturgy in the church, keeping things ready for the daily Eucharist by doing the sacristy work, singing in the church choir, visiting the sick, the aged, and the bereaving families of the parish and promoting vocations.
The people of the locality appreciate the services of the Sisters especially their teaching, pastoral activity, Sunday’s mission of teaching Catechism, contact with girls through Marian Sodality, preparing the first Communicants, and other ministries which the pioneers had begun.
