Accepting the option for the poor as a mandate in the successive General Chapters, Sr Miriam, the Provincial Superior, took initiative in the year 1994 to open a convent at Samalkha in Haryana. Sr Melvice and Sr Maria Jyoti pioneered this mission at Basada in Samalkha. They initially commuted daily from Karnal and later on stayed in the house of a Catholic and subsequently in the sacristy of the small church in the village. After four years of service by different sisters, on 29 December 1998 a convent was inaugurated at Samalkha by Bishop Gilbert Rego, the Bishop of Simla- Chandigarh Diocese. Sr Rose Margaret, the Superior, Sr Priyanjali and Sr Shamitha were the first members of this formal community.
Faith Formation, Remedial classes for children, dispensary, alternative medicine, developmental activities, income generating schemes, self help groups are all carried on by Sr Stella D’ Souza, the present Superior and community, in collaboration with Pragati Social Service Society of IMS Fathers.
