The first women religious to enter Tripura were Bethany Sisters on 27 July 1968 in Mariamnager near Agartala, Tripura. Their home was named as Shantir Rani Convent. Their main task was with the boarders who were children from interior villages of Tripura. They also taught in the Bengali medium school of the parish and other ministries like medical service, evangelization and developmental works. However the mission came to an abrupt end in 1980 due to the communal riots that erupted in June resulting in the permanent closure of the convent.
After a gap of thirty years, a new convent is being constructed in Khayerpur under Mariamnager parish. Rev Sr Noeline, the then Provincial superior and her team in 2009 under the direction of bishop Lumen Monteiro the Bishop of Agartala, purchased a plot of land at East Champamura, Old Agartala for the purpose of starting an English medium School.
The initial work was done and supervised by Sr Sumitha the Superior of Holy Cross Convent Agartala and her Community members. Sr Assumpta Maria played a vital role in the construction of the boundary wall and building work in spite of all the hurdles. When the campus was getting ready for starting the mission, Sr Noeline the Provincial Superior sent Srs. Eva, Harsha and Jessyna to take admission for the academic session 2012. A Community of three sisters was canonically erected on 9 January 2012, to cater to the needs of the School and the locality. Sr Eva was the first Superior and Headmistress along with Sr Shalini Mary and Sr Charilin.
25 January 2012, Wednesday was a Red letter day in the annals of Bethany Sisters as the inauguration of Bethany School, East Champamura, Khayerpur, took place with 47 newly admitted children of Nursery and K.G.I came to the School along with their Parents and Guardians. Fr. Ronald, the Parish Priest of Mariam Nagar, blessed the building and Sr. Sandhya, the Assistant Provincial Superior, inaugurated the School. This was the humble beginning of the tiny unit of the Church in Khayerpur.
In 2015 January Sr Benedicta Sapna took over as Superior of the Convent and Headmistress of the School. The members of the community at present are Sr Sapna, Sr Mary Joseph, Sr Susmitha, Sr Veronica Kimtei and Sr Elicia. The School has reached up to class IV and is making steady progress. The presence of Sisters is well appreciated in this area. In addition to attending the pastoral needs of the parish, they render service in the neighborhood by coaching students who attend Bengali Medium schools, Spoken English classes for the youth and purposeful family visits. We hope that the second innings here in Mariamnager would be more fruit bearing for the kingdom of God.
