Madeleine Convent Londa was opened on May 31, 1947 in memory of Sister Magdalene of revered memory who passed away in April 1947. Rev. Fr Aloysius D’ Cruz S.J, the Parish Priest of Alnavar, was constantly requesting Mother Priscilla, who was the then local Superior of Presentation Convent Dharwad, to begin an English Medium School for the Catholic children of Londa; however a Kannada medium school was started, as per the desire of the people. The Founder accompanied the pioneers to Londa to respond to the needs of such poor and lowly of the Lord. As the years rolled by the strength of the school was on the increase, so the need was felt to bifurcate the classes. Sr Flora the H.M obtained permission from the Educational Department for the bifurcation of STD I to VII. Due to lack of space in the classrooms the new foundation was blessed and laid by Rev. Fr Richard Castelino O.C.D. in 1985 and the new school building was ready in 1989, which was financed by the Bethany Generalate. In the same year Sr Victoria succeeded in getting the permission to start the High School.
At present sisters are involved in teaching, pastoral, social, hostel and family apostolate. They work for the total development of the students, teach catechism and impart moral education to them. They run a Primary Kannada Medium School and teach English from 6th standard onwards focusing on girls’ education. The Sisters visit the mission stations regularly not only for religious services, but also to identify themselves with the poor.
New ventures at Madeleine Convent, Londa:
Nava Chethana Kendra a social work centre is one of the new ventures in the Western Province, which was inaugurated on 5th July 2014 at Londa. It has a vision of holistic development for the people of the area and surrounding areas. The present focus is on children, youth and women. This centre encourages women to be self confident in order to face the challenges of present society. There are women self-help groups, computer classes, spoken English classes, Mini English Library and a bag making unit for women. It is indeed a happy and unique experience in the history of our congregation and especially in the history of Madeleine Convent, Londa. The Sisters keep alive the Spirit of Fr Founder and work for the uplift of the less fortunate, the poor and the needy.
At present there are 9 members in the community. Four are involved in teaching apostolate, five in pastoral and social apostolate. Our joy is to be with the people, work for them and for the church at large.
