Loyola Convent Gadag- Betageri is a community established on May 28, 1960 at the invitation of the then Parish Priest late Msgr Manuel Alvares of St Ignatius Church. It was formally inaugurated on June 6, 1960.
The Pioneers were:Sr M Gretta
Sr. M. Perpetua
Sr. M. Loyola
Sr. M. Placid
Sr. M. Gertrude
The sisters were engaged in teaching and Sr. Gertrude was involved in pastoral care and Sr Placid was in charge of house management. The purpose is well explained in the words of Fr. M. Alvares “The dire need of Sisters to bring more life and joy in the Parish and to bring steadiness and desired progress in St John’s Kannada Higher Primary School, run by the Diocese of Belgaum.” Eventually Loyola English Medium School was opened at the request of the public. It caters to the needs of the urban population and also makes the presence of Christ felt in this area. The noble work is being continued ever since then. The good education imparted by the sisters, motivated every family to send their children to school. They acquired the vacant settlement land to put up their own houses close to the Church and the convent. The dedicated services of the sisters have enhanced the growth of the Institutions year by year. Later the School was upgraded to a High School – Loyola High School. In 2005 Loyola PU College was opened with Sr Rose Ann as the first Principal. The services of Sisters in the field of education, pastoral as well as social work are highly appreciated by the people.
