On the request of Rev Fr Denis Menezes, the then Parish Priest of Mother of Divine Grace Church, Kalaburagi and at the invitation of Rt Rev. Dr Joseph D’ Silva, Bishop of Bellary, Sr Bonita the Provincial Superior of Bangalore Province, with the consent of her council and with the approval of the Superior General Rev. Sr Jyoti initiated the formation of a new community in Kalaburagi in Bellary Diocese. On 18 Aug 2005 Kalaburagi was erected as the new Diocese with Rt Rev. Dr Robert Miranda as the first Bishop.
Sr Bonita, the Provincial Superior of Bangalore Province, sent Sr Linda and Joyet, as the first missionaries to Kalaburagi. They joined the community of Vidya Rani Convent, Chittapur on 17 July 2005. Sr Linda was appointed as the Head Mistress of St Mary’s Parish School. On 8 August 2005 Sr Linda and Sr Joyet shifted to a rented house at Kalaburagi making Bethany Convent an affiliated community.
Rev Sr Jyoti, the Superior General, along with the General Councillor Sr Anseline conducted canonical visitation of the Community on 17 and 18 August 2005. Sr Sylvie Rodrigues from Bethany Convent, Jayamahal, Bangalore joined the community to render her service at the Bishop’s office. On the 15 August 2006 the first house of the Western Province at Kalaburgi was erected. Rt Rev. Bishop Robert Miranda offered the holy Sacrifice of the Mass during which the General Councillor read the Decree of Erection. Sr Rose Ann the Provincial Superior unveiled the portrait of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On 17th morning Sr Linda was installed as Superior of Bethany convent Kalaburagi. On the 11th of June 2009 Sr Rose Ann, the Provincial Superior, and Sr Shanthi Priya, the Provincial Councillor, and Sr Aileen, the Province Procurator, met the Bishop of Kalaburagi and sought his permission to start a School at Bhrammapur village. Sr Linda who was the Superior from 2006 to 2012 completed her two terms. In her place Sr Lysetta was appointed as the superior on 10 June 2012 and as the HM of St Mary’s Primary Parish School. Another important event in the history of Bethany Convent Kalaburagi took place on June 2012 when Little Flower kindergarten was inaugurated with 19 children from the locality. Sr Heleena, Sr Sheela and Sr Moncia joined the community and took care of those little ones. On 4 Dec 2012 Bishop Robert Miranda offered Mass and reserved the Blessed Sacrament followed by adoration. The canonical visitation by the Superior General was delegated to Sr Assumpta the General Councillor and Sr Christine the Procurator General. They visited the Convent on 8 Dec 2012. 25 March 2013 was a memorable day in the history of our Congregation as well as in the Diocese of Kalaburagi as the foundation was laid for the Bethany Convent as well as for the school building by Rt Rev. Dr Robert Miranda, Bishop of Kalaburagi and the Provincial team was present on this occasion.
On 23 Aug 2013 the construction work for the school and the convent building started by the Engineers and contractors Mr Shreenivas, JJ construction Bangalore and Mr Adithya Varma architect - Alphonso Associates Mysore. On 22 Feb 2014 permission was granted to start the primary school, with std I to V and on 30 March 2014, kindergarten was registered. On 1 June 2014 the KG and Std I classes began. On 3 June 2014, in the place of Sr Lysetta, Sr Mary Magdalene was installed as Superior by Sr Shanthi Priya, the Provincial Superior, who was also appointed as HM of St Mary’s Parish School. On 4 June 2015 the newly constructed building was inaugurated by Sr Shanthi Priya, the Provincial Superior, and Sr Rose Celine and Sr Assumpta the General Councillors unveiled the plaque after which the Convent was blessed by Rt Rev. Dr Robert Miranda the Bishop of Kalaburagi followed by Eucharistic celebration, blessing of the school building and fellowship meal.
