Pastoral care for the elderly
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven” (Eccl 3:1)
It was a long awaited need of Bethany in Germany to be at the disposal of the sick in the hospital. And this became a reality when we received a call from Msgr Heribert August on the 23rd of October 2013 expressing the need to have the Bethany Sisters in Marien hospital Aachen as the existing community of Franciscan Sisters would be leaving the place in the month of May 2014. Srs Irene Sequeira and Geetha pioneered the mission on the 1st of May. On the 1st of June 2014 the community was canonically erected and on same day Sr Juliana Lasrado joined the community as the third member. On the 1st of Sept. 2014 Sr Shanthi Preethi and Sr Sunitha Lydia joined the community
The Franciscan Sisters were officially given the farewell on the 31st of August after their 161 years of service to the sick being the first branch house the congregation and the Bethany Sisters were welcomed on the same occasion. One of the Franciscan Sisters is still continues to give her service to the sick in the pastoral care.
At present Sr Irene and Sr Geetha are involved in the pastoral work in the hospital visiting the patients and looking after their spiritual needs. Sr Juliana is pursuing the nursing in the same institute. SrsShanthiPreethi and Sunitha Lydia who nurse the sick in the hospital at present will be starting their nursing course in the year 2017.
The convent building was not in a good condition to reside, hence at present it is under repair and by the end of this year (2016) we may be able to occupy the same.
Thanks to all those who enabled us to have a Bethany community in this place. May the lord who planted Bethany in this place help and assist us that it may grow, bear much fruit, fruit that lasts for His Kingdom. The God of Bethany who called us and planted Bethany in Marien hospital - Burscheid to continue the work which was stated by the Franciscan Sisters, be our constant guide and make the work of his hands bear fruit in plenty in sharing His compassionate love to the sick and the needy.
